Concept Development

Architectural concept development is the foundational phase where an architect/designer transforms a client's vision, site data, and functional requirements into a single, cohesive "big idea" or narrative that guides every future design decision.

Core Pillars of the Process

  • Client Vision: Extracting the owner's goals, aesthetic preferences, lifestyle or business needs, and budget limits.

  • Site Analysis: Studying physical conditions like solar paths, wind directions, topography, local building codes, and regional history.

  • The Narrative (The "Big Idea"): Formulating an overarching theme or abstract concept (such as connection, layering, or erosion) that dictates form, spatial flow, and material choices.

  • Translation: Expressing the idea through rough hand sketches, digital diagrams, and massing models rather than rigid floor plans.
